Why is the problem of urine leakage in children?

Babies can urinate at any time during sleep. Because, they do not have the power to control urine. Parents know that they have urinated only after they cry and scream after getting wet with urine.

After four years, they are usually able to control their urine. But in four to five percent of children, urine leakage continues to be a problem even after reaching the age of controlling urine. This problem cannot be considered normal.

What kind of problem is this?

Lack of self-control in urine even after reaching age is called ‘urinary instability or enuresis’ in medical language. It is also known as bedwetting because it is usually done while lying in bed at night. It is divided into two parts, primary bed waiting and secondary bed waiting.

If the person urinates on the bed continuously for 6 months or more, it is called primary bedwetting. If the problem of urine leakage reappears after 6 months, it is called secondary bedwetting.

the reason

Hereditary: If the father had this problem during his childhood, then the child may also have this problem.

Small bladder: If a child’s urinary bladder is not well developed, it will be difficult to control urine at night.

Bladder weakness: If the nervous system that controls the bladder is working slowly, the bladder fills up. But the child does not wake up or does not get the urge to urinate.

Hormone imbalance: Some children do not produce antidiuretic (ADH) hormone. As a result, there is no urinary control.

Similarly, if the level of vasodilation hormone, which controls urine, has decreased for some reason, urine will continue to flow.

Urinary tract infection (UTI): Urinary tract infection also reduces the ability to control urine in children. Symptoms of urinary tract infections include bedwetting while sleeping, red and pink urine, and burning while urinating.

Diabetes: Bedwetting at night is seen as the first sign of diabetes. In this case, there may be more than average urine at one time.

Constipation: The bowels of children suffering from constipation cannot function properly. If constipation persists for a long time, the muscles that produce stool and urine become weak. Even in this case it is difficult to control urine.

Back vein problem: Even if there is a problem in the back vein, there is no urinary control.

mental impact

If a child has a problem with touching urine, they feel ashamed. Which can gradually cause mental problems in the child. Even if one is big, the habit of urinating on the bed keeps them humiliated. Because of this, they cannot even travel far. Gradually they fall prey to depression.

What age does it look like?

– This problem can happen to one in every six children up to five years of age.

– 1 in 8 children under 6 years of age.

– 1 in 10 children under 7 years of age.

– 0.5 percent may occur in adolescents up to 15 years of age.

Symptoms

Leaking urine is a disease in itself. However, it can also be a sign of other diseases. If there is no other symptom except leakage of urine, then it is called monosymptomatic voiding.

Similarly, along with leakage of urine, other problems such as small stream of urine, burning, rapid onset, inability to stop, are known as symptomatic voiding.

identification

Before treating it, the child’s home environment is questioned. Then the bladder, back and stomach are checked according to the symptoms. Similarly, urine infection is also checked.

Another is to maintain a bladder diary. How much fluid has been drunk in 24 hours? How much urine has passed? The problem is detected by looking at it.

solution

If there are no symptoms other than urinating at night, it is suggested to make some changes in the child’s behavior. In some cases, prior to this treatment, the parents are reassured that it can be gradually controlled as they age.

By setting an alarm, the child is taught to wake up once at night to change urine. It can also be prevented. Don’t eat junk food before going to bed at night. If there are other symptoms, after treatment according to the symptoms, the problem of bedwetting will be reduced.
